Wild Bird Rescue, Inc., serves twelve Texas counties by receiving birds from Texas Parks and Wildlife, Animal Control, Humane Societies, Police Departments, Sheriff's Departments, area businesses, and concerned individuals. We have received over 8,500 birds since the year 2001. We rescue wild birds, rehabilitate them, and then release them back into the wild.

Milestones

Baby season is marked in milestones. Milestones as in number of birds, numbers released, new species, etc. This week has been busy. Bird number 600 came to us today. Monday we released the two Canada Geese we raised from babies (our first ever Canada Geese babies), the Yellow-crowned Night Heron was released on Wednesday (The first we have raised and released. Before Wednesday, we transferred them to SPWRC in Lubbock.) Wednesday we also released 20 doves and today we released over 25songbirds. Big week at Wild Bird Rescue!

American Kestrel

This fledgling American Kestrel was found cornered by dogs by an employee at the Sonic in Iowa Park. Good thing he was not injured. We will release him in two weeks.

Yellow-crested Heron

We are about to release this Yellow-crested Heron. So far, we have received almost six hundred birds. I like release days for more reasons that one: First, it is our job to raise or cure birds, and second, release days are our goal.

Wren in Nest

If you have ever wondered what a baby bird looks like in his nest, here is your chance to see one. This nice lady brought the wren in its nest. Windy days throw nests out of their trees.

Five Baby Scissortails

Here are two of the five nestling Scissortails that were rescued by two concerned citizens. They were driving their car when they saw what looked like a log in the middle of the road. Turns out it was a nest with five baby Scissortails. They are a handful, but cute!

Baby Wrens

These baby wrens came to us all the way from Kansas. I bet you are wondering how they got here! A friend of Wild Bird Rescue was in Kansas and came home to Wichita Falls with a bird house she thought was not occupied. On the way home she started to hear some chirping, so that's how these babies came to us.

Mystery Nestling

We are having difficulty identifying this bird. It's important to know what species it is so that we can feed him the correct diet.

480 Birds

We are now up to bird number 480 for the year. The past three days saw an average of 15 birds per day come through our doors. The high winds make it difficult for little ones to stay in their nests and/or trees. The good news is that we released 42 birds yesterday. Robins, Blue Jays, Starlings, White-winged Doves, Mourning Doves, and Eurasian Collared Doves.

I like release days!

Yellow Crowned Heron Fledglings

We received two Yellow Crowned Herons. We're going to raise them here at the center instead of driving them to Lubbock. Lila is holding one while I'm trying to feed him a minnow.

Bob's New Blog

Hello. I'm Bob. This is my new blog. How do you like it? I am currently madly feeding rescued nestling and fledgling birds -- about 100 of them, like the baby Robin at right, brought in this month by concerned citizens -- but I'll be posting soon. Please come back soon to read about my experiences at the Wild Bird Rescue, Inc. center.
